Un hommage à Elisabeth Nowotny
Elisabeth Nowotny était un membre chéri et aimé de la Sangha allemande, une merveilleuse enseignante du Dharma et une amie pour beaucoup, et une véritable pionnière de Rigpa durant ses premières années. Elisabeth est décédée le 19 mars 2026, le jour de son 80e anniversaire.

Que nous ayons connu Elisabeth ou non, les souvenirs et témoignages suivants de ceux qui lui étaient proches nous rappellent ses belles qualités et sa contribution significative à Rigpa depuis ses débuts.

Pendant des décennies, Elisabeth a été l'une des pionnières les plus importantes et influentes du travail de Sogyal Rinpoché et de Rigpa en Allemagne et au-delà.
Elle a rencontré Rinpoché en 1986 et a ensuite participé à chaque retraite Rigpa en Europe avec son défunt mari, Heinz Nowotny. Tous deux se sont consacrés avec enthousiasme à l'étude et à la pratique, utilisant principalement leurs propres notes des enseignements et les enregistrements audio disponibles à l'époque.
Grâce aux fréquents engagements d'enseignement de Sogyal Rinpoché en Allemagne et aux retraites d'hiver annuelles à Kirchheim, la sangha allemande s'est développée rapidement. À la demande de Rinpoché, Elisabeth a donc commencé à offrir des soirées régulières d'étude et de pratique à Munich plusieurs années avant la publication du livre, avec Tom Geist, le défunt traducteur du livre Le Livre tibétain de la vie et de la mort (TBLD).
En 1992, Elisabeth a également participé à la célèbre retraite de trois mois à Lerab Ling. Vers la fin de cette retraite, les premières mesures ont été prises pour développer un programme de formation d'enseignants, car Rinpoché avait prévu que le livre TBLD susciterait un intérêt public croissant pour les enseignements.
C'est exactement ce qui s'est passé en Allemagne lorsque le livre a été publié en 1993. Comme il y avait un besoin au sein de la Sangha d'instructeurs qualifiés capables d'enseigner authentiquement les enseignements dans divers lieux et centres, Elisabeth, en collaboration avec Rigpa International et le défunt Tom Geist, a commencé à développer, établir et diriger un programme de formation d'instructeurs régulier et bien structuré. Elle a plus tard considéré cela comme son héritage personnel à la Sangha.
Comme le dit le proverbe : Derrière chaque femme forte se tient un homme fort. Ce qu'Elisabeth a accompli si merveilleusement n'aurait pas été possible sans le soutien désintéressé de son mari aimant Heinz, qui prenait soin d'elle, surtout lorsque sa mobilité physique a décliné.
Elisabeth était, d'une part, inébranlablement dévouée à Sogyal Rinpoché et à ses enseignements, et d'autre part, liée à la Sangha avec un dévouement incommensurable. Avec joie et enthousiasme, elle prenait soin de tous ceux qui cherchaient ses conseils ou son orientation, et grâce à sa mémoire extraordinaire, elle se souvenait de tous ceux avec qui elle avait noué un lien significatif.

Quand je pense à Elisabeth, je pense à la sœur de Dharma bien-aimée, mais aussi à l'enseignante et à l'amie spirituelle qu'elle était pour tant d'entre nous. Pleine de joie et d'enthousiasme, et avec une énergie débordante. Elle était la ‘Grande Dame’ et la pionnière de Rigpa Allemagne.
Très peu de temps après avoir rencontré Sogyal Rinpoché, avec un esprit de renoncement remarquable, elle a laissé derrière elle sa vie réussie mais samsarique et s'est entièrement consacrée aux enseignements du Dharma du Bouddha et à Rigpa.
Elle aimait profondément les gens – c'était sûrement l'une de ses qualités les plus remarquables. Je me souviens si bien de sa curiosité presque insatiable, avec laquelle elle essayait de découvrir qui était la personne avec qui elle se trouvait, ce dont elle ou il avait besoin, et comment le précieux Dharma pouvait être transmis d'une manière qui réponde à ces besoins.
In a truly wonderful way, this energy flowed not only into her work as a teacher or into the development of the instructor training, but also into the support and guidance she gave us ‘trainees’. Unforgettable are the long nights in the sauna, talking to identify and break through confusion or blockages, or over a beer in the pub to solve a problem. Or simply to celebrate being together.
She lived ‘Passion for Compassion’ in every moment. A part of you will live on in those of us who had the privilege of meeting you.

She has left behind a rich life from which we can learn so much. May she realise the Bardo teachings, which were another of her passions, and attain ultimate enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.

Elisabeth, a pioneer from the very beginning, one of the few who attended Sogyal Rinpoche’s summer retreat in the Pyrenees as early as the summer before the first Kirchheim retreat in 1986… A pioneer, a great practitioner, a determined teacher… and as she herself said recently: “My legacy, I believe, is the instructor training.”
Some of you may not have had the chance to meet her, but I think her photo radiates her strength and joy! Perhaps there will soon be a moment to share our shared stories — I can picture her right now in Kirchheim, late in the evening, selecting suitable video clips for the next day… or with her husband Heinz at Lerab Ling…. May her wish for enlightenment for the benefit of all come true.
Many of the people I’ve been speaking with these days remember the instructor training in Bad Zwesten with Elisabeth very well.

Our wonderful Elisabeth Nowotny passed away last night on her 80th birthday. I have known Elisabeth since 1990, and she built up the German instructors’ sangha with so much love and dedication, guiding it with her love and care. She always saw and embodied Sogyal Rinpoche as her great protector and master.
She sometimes said that she felt and visualized Sogyal Rinpoche behind her, and how he strengthened and held her. Together with her husband Heinz, she has dedicated herself to this path since the mid-1980s; they were together in Prapoutel, at the first Dzogchen retreat in 1992 at Lerab Ling, and they participated in the three-year retreat.
She has received teachings and empowerments from all the great masters of our lineage, such as Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, Dodrupchen Rinpoche, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Dzogchen Rinpoche, Jigme Puntsok Rinpoche, Trulshik Rinpoche, Yangthang Rinpoche, Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche, Khandro Tsering Chödrön, Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche, and many, many other masters.
She is most certainly in the hearts of Guru Rinpoche, Sogyal Rinpoche, and Amitabha. Please direct your practice and heartfelt prayers toward Elisabeth Nowotny, that she may have a peaceful journey through the bardo. Thank you for everything, Elisabeth. We love you.

Maureen, also a long-time Rigpa student, says:
Elisabeth was always interested in the big picture and wanted to contribute to Rinpoche’s international vision, as well as working so hard for Germany. From 1995–2000 she was an active member of the international Curriculum Team headed up by Bert van Baar and responsible for the Streams Programme. Her input and hard work were invaluable.
From 1995–1998 she was one of the national study and practice directors who made up the Lerab Ling Retreat Team — seeing to the running of the retreats at every level and often caring for a group at the same time. These were special retreats where the retreat team was in training with Rinpoche to take back his training to their respective countries.
She attended several international teacher training retreats with me (and sometimes Ian Maxwell) and was always serious and committed about reproducing the trainings nationally.

Lors d'une réunion des enseignants et des directeurs de centres de pratique en Allemagne, nous avons imaginé comment Elisabeth, avec les enseignants de Rigpa Andreas Ritter et Kirsten Czeczor, tous deux décédés en 2025, soutiendrait le jeune Yangsi de Sogyal Rinpoche dans une vie future et poursuivrait son chemin avec lui.
